Elder Abuse - What You Should Do
If you suspect a loved one is being abused or neglected, act quickly. Every day matters - for their safety and for the strength of any claim.
- Make sure the elder is safe. Move them if necessary and get an independent medical evaluation.
- Photograph injuries, living conditions, and any suspicious documents.
- Report suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services (San Diego County: (800) 510-2020) and, if a crime, to law enforcement.
- Request a complete copy of the medical and facility records in writing.
- Preserve financial records, checkbooks, and estate documents.
- Call a lawyer before speaking with the facility's risk-management or insurance representatives.
